This was an interesting first book in the Outlander series, but nowhere near as gripping as e.g. the Games of Thrones series. Saying that, I am intrigued enough to look forward to reading the second book to find out more about Claire and Jamie.

I thoroughly enjoyed the historical elements Gabaldon has woven her story around and the many interesting characters she's introduced already in the first book. It's pure genius with the jump back in time 200 years to create a unique story and to allow characters to develop and grow.

I am however surprised at how relaxed Claire seems to be with being separated from her 'modern' husband and how quickly she accepts her 'historical' life and the expectations of how a woman 'should' behave and what they 'should' accept in life.

It's the second book about the Shell House Detectives, but you can read it standalone (although you may like it as much as I did and read the first book in the series afterwards!). This book seems to have two different titles: 'Hostile Environments' and ' The Social Distance Between Us: How Remote Politics Wrecked Britain' This is a MUST read!! A real eye opener and a perfect book to base important discussions on. Yes, the book contains views belonging to certain political camps, but the painstakingly detailed research that has gone into creating this book including a huge number of real life examples make Darren McGarvey and his book forces to be reckoned with. Politicians, policy makers and those who want to, or more importantly can , influence decision making in Britain, should make it a priority to read this book.
