The Fake Wife by Sharon Bolton

The fake wife bit of this book is the start of the story, a story that goes from what appears to be a chance meeting in a hotel restaurant followed by a one night stand to kidnapping, dangerous driving, murders and many layers of intrigue and deception; all excepted when there is a politician involved...

PC Garry Mizon, the 'forever' traffic cop and flower grower was my favourite character together with Lexy Thomas the Detective Sergeant allocated to the case.

Olive is the lead throughout the book and the story is told mainly via her events - present and past.

Michael, well he's the politician, so not much more to say, is there?

We also have Maddy and Eloise, Michael's ex-wives. Gwen, the ex mother-in-law and her granddaughters.

After a rather cringeworthy and slow start, the story really takes off and we're treated to many layers of intrigue as we get more information about Olive, Michael, Maddy and Eloise - oh, and the meddling Gwen.

This title will be released on November 9, 2023.

Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow by Yuval Noah Harari

Governments manage countries, but they don't lead them. More and more power is with corporations, corporations who are only answering to their share holders Title: Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow Author: Yuval Noah Harari ' Sapiens showed us where we came from. In uncertain times, Homo Deus shows us where we're going' Looking through my Kindle highlights from this book, which I read back in 2017 when it was first released, I am instantly reminded of the brilliance that is Harari. He has a way of bringing up crucial ideas and thoughts and then presenting them in an easily accessible way. This is a great, thought-provoking book encouraging us to question and re-think the world around us. Take for example Harari's comment about the possibility of logical bombs already included in codes of our key infrastructure assets. What happens when 'the baddies' (people, corporations or even countries) decides to access these codes and modify them? Many...

Reclaiming Mni Sota by Colin Mustful

This is a fascinating alternate history of the US - Dakota War of 1862. Historic events are cleverly used to tell the stories of Samuel (the white man) and Waabi (the native Ojibwe) who are growing up and finding out how the world works and how they fit in. Waabi is striving to protect his homeland and maintaining his traditions, and Samuel is trying to create a life of freedom, prosperity, and abundance with his family by relocating from Vermont to Minnesota to settle on land previously used by the Ojibwe and rivalling groups. Informative, eye-opening and thought-provoking, especially for someone like me who's never heard about this part of American history as it just wasn't part of my European school curriculum. Reclaiming Mni Sota, an Alternate History of the U.S. - Dakota War of 1862, by Colin Mustful will be published on 10 October 2023, but can be pre-ordered now.
